I Was Told There’d Be Cake by Sloane Crosley I’d been wanting to read these essays for quite awhile. Anything at all funny and related to New York is right up my alley. Since moving here, so many things that I would not have found funny because they seemed too unbelievable are now hilarious. Living in New York, I now know that many of the stories that others think may be exaggerated really are not. The craziest things happen here, and finding the humor in them isn’t so hard to do. Some of my favorite essays include Crosley’s first job in publishing, the night someone pooped on her floor at a dinner party, and her imagined illness due to an overindulgence in spinach. You don’t really need to know any more than that to know that if you live in New York (and even if you don’t), you’ll most likely appreciate and get a kick out of this book.
